Some successful cases:
1. A sixty-year-old lady was sent to Dr. Xu's hospital in 1998 because of worsened numbness and pain in the legs which had rendered her incapable of taking care of herself in daily life. The patient had a history of Type 2 diabetes for over twenty years. She had had symptoms of unusual thirst and frequent urination, accompanied by numbness and pain in the limbs, light swelling in the legs and blurred sight. Besides, she had complications of neuropathy, nephrosis and retinal disease, for which she had been hospitalized several times but without much improvement. After she had taken the decoctions and Chinese patent drugs prescribed by Dr. Xu for seven consecutive days, the patient's pain had considerably lessened, and three months later she was able to do light house work and go to the hospital by herself. In 1999, the patient was hospitalized again because of serious general edema in her legs. A urine test showed that her 24-hour urinary albumin was 0.42g. One month later, when her urinary albumin was reduced to 0.25g after being treated with Chinese patented medicine and decoctions prescribed by Dr. Xu, the patient was permitted to leave the hospital.

2. A fifty-six-year-old Japanese gentleman visited Dr. Xu's hospital in Shanghai in 1997 for Type 2 diabetes. The patient had had symptoms of unusual thirst, frequent urination and extreme hunger, as well as extreme fatigue, blurred sight and numbness and pain in the limbs for sixteen years. He had received treatment in other countries but had got little improvement. The patient was unusually thin and weak, and was suffering from numbness and pain in the limbs when he visited Dr. Xu. A laboratory test showed HbA1C9%; the 24-hour urinary albumin was 99.9 mg. The symptoms were diagnosed as Type 2 diabetes with complications of nephrosis, neuropathy and retinal disease. Dr. Xu prescribed decoction for thirty days and some Chinese patent drugs and western medicine, which the patient took back to Japan. His symptoms had visible improvements after he took the prescriptions. After that, the patient went to Shanghai once a month for medical visits. In January 2000, the patient had another physical examination in the hospital. His HbA1C was found to have dropped to 6.6%, and he had gained 4 kilograms. The symptoms of numbness and pain had also remarkably improved.
