1. A fifty-nine-year-old Mr. Xu was sent to hospital for a stroke of apoplexy in December 1996. Twenty days later, he left hospital when his conditions became stable. His right hand and leg, however, were paralyzed. His facial complexion was famished, and his tongue had a thick white coating. According to Chinese medicine, the apoplexy was caused by deficiency of qi and yang, which blocked the blood vessels. After receiving Dr. Yuan’s acupuncture and massage for a period of treatment, the patient right limbs felt warmer, and his ability of physical movement was visibly improved. After each treatment, Dr. Yuan would give the patient a prescription of physical exercise, active and passive alike. The patient was able to move about and take care of himself in daily life after another one and a half periods of treatment.
2. A sixty-four-year-old Mr. Zhao was sent to hospital for a sudden relapse of apoplexy in August 1988. He was discharged one month later when his conditions became stable, but his right side was paralyzed. His limbs were stiff and were constantly shivering; his facial complexion and eyes were both red, and his tongue was redder than normal with a thick yellow coating. According to Chinese medicine, this was caused by the excessive rise of the liver-yin. After receiving Dr. Yuan’s acupuncture and massage treatment for three times, which were complemented by both active and passive physical exercises, the patient’s right limbs became less stiff. Before the end of the third period of treatment, his joints were flexible enough to take care of himself in daily life. |

Dr. Zhao has inherited the special skills of his ancestors, especially those of relaxing muscles and stimulating blood circulation by the cupping therapy, which often produces relieving effect. In the past two decades and more, he has accumulated rich experience in combined therapy of Chinese and western medicine and in the traditional techniques of acupuncture, massage, osteopathy, and hydrolysis. He was the first doctor in China to adopt the combined method of hydrolysis and acupoint block in the treatment of the protrusion of the cervical vertebra and intervertebral disc, tennis elbows, myotenositis and bony spurs. Combining contemporary medical theories with practice, he has treated fractures using his grandfather's method in the fixation of bones with small splints, as well as external application and oral administration of medicine, which has proved to be very effective. His methods have helped most of his patients recover in about one month. Dr. Zhao's fame has gone far and wide.
