1. A fifty-nine-year-old Mr. Xu was sent to hospital for a stroke of apoplexy in December 1996. Twenty days later, he left hospital when his conditions became stable. His right hand and leg, however, were paralyzed. His facial complexion was famished, and his tongue had a thick white coating. According to Chinese medicine, the apoplexy was caused by deficiency of qi and yang, which blocked the blood vessels. After receiving Dr. Yuan’s acupuncture and massage for a period of treatment, the patient's right limbs felt warmer, and his ability of physical movement was visibly improved. After each treatment, Dr. Yuan would give the patient a prescription of physical exercise, active and passive alike. The patient was able to move about and take care of himself in daily life after another one and a half periods of treatment.
2. A sixty-four-year-old Mr. Zhao was sent to hospital for a sudden relapse of apoplexy in August 1988. He was discharged one month later when his conditions became stable, but his right side was paralyzed. His limbs were stiff and were constantly shivering; his facial complexion and eyes were both red, and his tongue was redder than normal with a thick yellow coating. According to Chinese medicine, this was caused by the excessive rise of the liver-yin. After receiving Dr. Yuan’s acupuncture and massage treatment for three times, which were complemented by both active and passive physical exercises, the patient’s right limbs became less stiff. Before the end of the third period of treatment, his joints were flexible enough to take care of himself in daily life. |

1. A Ms Xu visited Dr. Zhen in July 1993 for urinary problems. She had had frequent micturition, urgent urination, and dribbling urination for over twenty years. She had to urinate about every thirty minutes, and she had a constant feeling of abdominal distention. The symptoms would become more serious when the patient was tired. She had visited a number of major hospitals in Shanghai but without any improvement. After receiving Dr. Zhen’s acupuncture treatment with the method of tonifying the kidney and warming yang for one period, her urination became much easier, the feeling of abdominal distention was much less serious, and her urinal intervals extended to two hours. After another two periods of treatment, the patient’s conditions became stable. Her symptoms of frequent micturition and urgent urination occurred only occasionally, but much less seriously than before. An examination on September 1,1993 showed that the results of the laboratory tests were basically normal. To consolidate the effect, the patient took another year’s treatment by Dr. Zhen before she stopped it. Another examination in August 1995 showed the patient’s conditions had returned to normal.
